“Radiant and energetic, but well-paced and sensitive of its place, her violin is blown as if on the lightest of spring winds; an unraveling series of dawn-lit notes which take flight as soon as the sun rises.” – A Closer Listen

Hoshiko Yamane, a Japanese violinist, composer, and electronic producer based in Berlin, has garnered recognition both as a solo artist and as a member of the influential electronic group Tangerine Dream. Over the past five years, she has established herself as a versatile musician with a series of releases under her own name on the esteemed neo-classical label 1631 Recordings/Decca Publishing. Primarily focused on acoustic sounds with strings, her solo work under the name Hoshiko Yamane showcases her classical training and innovative approach.

In addition to her solo endeavours, Yamane collaborates extensively with dancers and theatre companies, bringing her musical talents to diverse artistic projects. Her experience as a violinist includes touring with artists such as the French singer and actor Jane Birkin from 2011 to 2013.

While her solo releases highlight her prowess in neo-classical composition, Yamane’s side project, Tukico, sees her exploring electronic music alongside her signature electric violin. With Tukico, she released her debut EP “Become” in early 2020 on Hush Hush Records (USA) followed by her first full album “Primitive” later that summer on Subcontinental Records, showcasing her fusion of classical and electronic elements.

Yamane’s live performances as Tukico offer a mesmerising experience, featuring hypnotic improvisations using loop pedals, a Moog synthesizer, and her five-string electric viola. Her sonic palette, characterised by soft-toned layers of synthetic pulsations and atmospheric textures, creates an immersive journey into inner space.

In 2020, Yamane embarked on a collaboration with the Italian composer, arranger, producer, and guitarist Eraldo Bernocchi. Their partnership resulted in the album “Mujo” (released on Denovali Records), blending traditional classical motifs with innovative electronic production. Building on their initial success, Bernocchi and Yamane reunited in 2023 to create their second album, “Sabi,” inspired by the Japanese concept of appreciating the beauty of impermanence and decay. Released on December 15, 2023, via Denovali Records, “Sabi” presents a unique fusion of electronic and acoustic elements, with Bernocchi’s pulsating textures complementing Yamane’s haunting violin melodies to craft a cinematic sonic landscape that resonates with emotion.
